Secrets Behind the most famous glasses in history (Part 2)

We previously talked on our blog about some of the most famous glasses in history and the people who made them popular. Celebrities like Le Corbusier, Audrey Hepburn, Daniel Libeskind, Karl Lagerfeld, Richard Meier, Andy Warhol, Philip Johnson, Jack Nicholson, and Woody Allen have all made their mark in history with their unique style of wearing legendary glasses.

But they are not the only ones. That’s why we want to take a fresh look at some of the icons of history and have a closer look, quite literally, at their legendary glasses.

  1. Greta Garbo

Most of the American actress Greta Garbo’s public appearances in front of the media were always with sunglasses. It was her way of trying to go unnoticed and achieve a certain level of discretion given her popularity. Her image was so closely associated with her sunglasses that one of them was auctioned off in 2012 for $14,000.

  1. Elton John

The equally legendary British singer is undoubtedly a musical icon who is inseparable from his glasses. Eccentric, colorful, and always capable of being paired with his outfits. Elton John’s love for glasses is so strong that he has even released his own collection, consisting of 75 glasses that showcase and summarize the personal style he has sported throughout his career. His personal collection? Over 250,000 pairs of glasses!

  1. Michael Jackson

Like many other top celebrities, Michael Jackson used sunglasses to hide from the paparazzi, especially to hind his face during a time when he underwent several cosmetic changes. So much so that it’s hard to imagine a memory of Michael Jackson without his iconic aviator-style glasses.

  1. Bono (U2)

Another musical figure we can’t separate from his distinctive glasses. Although early in his career he opted for frameless glasses without lenses, it has become a habit for him to always wear sunglasses. This is due to his glaucoma, a condition that makes his eyes more sensitive to light and compresses the optic nerve fibers.

  1. Johnny Depp

Johnny Depp, the “Pirate of the Caribbean” in the film industry, has made the Moscot Originals Lemtosh glasses famous in different colors, especially the ones tinted with a violet hue. The lenses give him an intellectual look while accentuating his features.

  1. Robert Redford

The aviator glasses that Robert Redford wore in the film “Three Days of the Condor” were a sales hit. In fact, it was the best-selling model of the 1970s. That design has evolved over the years but has remained true to the style popularized by the actor. Brands like Dita, Mykita, and Cutler and Gross offer aviator models that could very well have been the ones the actor wore in that iconic movie.

  1. John Lennon

Who doesn’t remember any image of John Lennon with his ever-present glasses? They were undoubtedly a part of his image. Round glasses with thin metal frames and a retro vibe that, 50 years later, we still wear because they haven’t gone out of style. Many celebrities have imitated his style over the years, such as Liam Gallagher, Mick Jagger, or Lady Gaga. By the way, an anonymous fan paid $184,000 for Lennon’s glasses in an auction.
