Big sunglasses are so back: the return of oversized sunglasses

For a few seasons, sunglasses seemed to be competing to take up less and less space. Tiny frames, narrow lenses, and ’90s-inspired silhouettes became the norm.
Now, things are moving in the opposite direction.

Big sunglasses are back

Wide lenses, statement acetates, wraparound shapes, and XL frames are no longer just another accessory, they’re becoming one of the defining elements of the look.
And it’s not simply about going bigger. Today’s oversized sunglasses play with proportions in a much more intentional way.
After years of less is more, maybe it’s time to take up a little more space.

From the ’70s to the 2000s: the return of oversized sunglasses

Oversized sunglasses never really disappeared.
In the ’70s, large lenses were part of an aesthetic defined by glamour and extravagance. Decades later, in the 2000s, they became an off-duty essential for celebrities and models.
Back then, huge sunglasses almost served a purpose of their own: giving you something to hide behind.
Today, we’re bringing back some of that attitude, but the frames have evolved.
More sophisticated acetates, refined construction, tinted lenses, and more interesting proportions make today’s XL sunglasses feel nostalgic and contemporary at the same time.
A little bit ’70s. A little bit 2000s. Very now.

How to wear oversized sunglasses

Some sunglasses complete a look. Others are the look. That’s probably a big part of the appeal of oversized frames.
A great pair can transform even the simplest outfit: a white T-shirt and jeans, an oversized shirt, a clean-cut suit, or a black dress. When the frame has enough personality, you don’t need to add much else.
Oversized sunglasses are also an easy way to play with proportions. An XL frame can bring contrast to a minimalist outfit or add even more impact to something already expressive.
The key is to let them take center stage. Your sunglasses are the outfit.

How to choose the right oversized sunglasses for your face

Oversized doesn’t simply mean choosing a pair of sunglasses that’s too big for you.
Even when you’re looking for a statement frame, the proportions still need to work — and, most importantly, the sunglasses need to feel comfortable.
The width of the frame, the bridge, where your eyes sit within the lenses, and how the sunglasses rest on your face can make two seemingly similar frames fit completely differently. Shape matters too.
A large square frame creates a completely different effect from a rounded silhouette, while wraparound styles can bring a sportier or more futuristic feel.
So finding the right pair of oversized sunglasses isn’t simply about choosing the biggest frame you can find.
It’s about finding the proportions that work for you. Because the idea isn’t to disappear behind your sunglasses. It’s to find a pair good enough to make you want to.

Go big.
Small sunglasses had their moment. Now, XL frames, exaggerated proportions, and sunglasses that were never meant to go unnoticed are making their way back.
Square, round, wraparound or acetate: there’s no single way to wear them. Just one rule that feels pretty clear this season:Big is back. And we’re very into it.
